Cricket Team CE FIXTURES 2010 As you can see from the list above, we are playing our matches at two grounds in the 2010 season, there is a ground being built in Torrevieja as well as the Ayutamiento building us a junior size ground on La Marina We currently
train every Saturday on the market place on La Marina (unless we have a league
match on that day)
Due to transport problems S.F. didn’t arrive at the Woodbridge oval, Albir, until Alfas had played and beaten La-Manga twice. S.F. then had the task of playing four games, one after the other, so after a short warm up and team talk, they went into action in a seven-a-side, seven over game against La-Manga, quickly getting into their stride and scoring a healthy 81 runs. With a combination of good bowling and excellent fielding, La-Manga were restricted to 65 runs. In the next game S.F. batted first against Alfas and were restricted to 47 runs, never enough to hold back a very strong batting line up. Batting first again in the next game against La-Manga, S.F. totalled 59 runs and restricted them to 52. In the final game against Alfas, S.F. , instead of tiring, with some excellent work in the field, Kept the Alfas total down to 40 runs, which didn’t prove too much of a problem, once S.F. took up the challenge with the bat. So with 3 wins out of 4, it was a great day’s work for the youngsters. As expected captain Adam didn’t let the team down, scoring a total of 92 runs without being dismissed once, well supported by Michael and Ashley, bowling plaudits go to Kieran and Emily, backed up by brilliant fielding from Tommy, Connor, Angus and Aaron. The teams will meet again on 4th July and that cannot
come soon enough for the kids.
Then came the very impressive Classic cars, a big thankyou to them, closely
followed by the Euro Bikers, what a way to start the day. We were very pleased
to have the TKO roadshow with us, which gave the whole day a party atmosphere.
Then it was the turn of the cricket club who put on a high scoring entertaining adults v kids match. As one of the adults playing I hang my head in shame to report that the kids whupped us! Man of the Match has to go to Adam Alger who put on 50 runs in just over 3 overs. His Dad Jon tried to recover the game for us with some impressive batting but it was not to be, well done kids!
After such a gruelling game we were rewarded with live music provided by Phoenix productions, The duo Scandal, Patti Ross, internationaly renowned entertainer and Paul Schrager, versatile vocalist, thanks guys, a great way to end the day.
The younger kids were kept entertained with bouncy castles, the gladiator
challenge and foam pits. Toss in S.F very first League Match :
We found ourselves opening with bowlers Bob Norton and Colin Griffiths who had a combined age of 117 and we were rewarded early on with the wicket of Ahbiad bowled by Norton for 2, Griffiths bowled well beating the outside edge on numerous occasions but not getting the luck At twelve overs with fielding restrictions lifted it was time for spin and 13 year old Adam Alger got a wicket almost immediately with T. Stanford stumped expertly by Leigh Blann With Allah Loak pushing the score along at almost 8 an over and Morgan at the over end hitting out S.F needed something and Graham Shelton pulled of a good catch to dismiss Morgan for 46 off the bowling of Jack Webster A couple of wickets were picked up later on including another to Adams spin and Intellectuals closed their innings on 283 for 5 with opener Allah Loak scoring 134 not out an innings with lots of edges on his part and dropped catches on ours San Fulgencio Bowling Colin Griffiths 8 Overs 0 Maidens, 50 Runs, 0 Wickets Bob Norton 8 Overs, 1 Maiden, 39 Runs, 1 Wicket Adam Alger 7 Overs, 0 Maidens, 65 Runs, 2 Wickets Gary Williams 4 Overs, 0 Maidens, 26 Runs, 0 Wickets Michael Carter 3 overs, 0 Maidens, 23 Runs, 0 Wickets Jack Webster 5 overs, 0 Maidens, 36 Runs, 1 Wicket Walt Elders 3 Overs, 0 Maidens, 15 Runs, 0 Wickets John Procter 2 overs, 0 Maidens, 27 Runs, 1 Wicket We also bowled 32 wides which was Intellectuals third highest score During tea it was decided that the only chance we had of getting anywhere near their score was going for it from ball one this meant Leigh Blann and Bob Norton opening, both are big hitters but the plan didn’t quite work with both back in the hut for a combined score of 20 Vice Captain Gary Williams played a variety of strokes for his 13 and was out LBW, Jack Webster at the other end caught the eye with a classy 55 until he was out caught playing a tired shot Graham Shelton again looked solid in the middle order with a nicely compiled 17 before he was caught off the bowling of Intellectuals all rounder Allah Loak Adam Alger scored 8 and it was a nice moment when he was joined in the middle by his dad Jon who scored 22 with a combination of big hits and a sound defensive technique straight out of the MCC coaching manual Colin Griffiths came to the wicket and batted well to make our second highest score of the day 27 John Procter came and went for 1 but he had got the wicket of E.Dawes LBW for 0 earlier, and it was left to Walt Elders and 14 year old Michael Carter to bat out the remaining overs and they did this with Michael scoring a nicely timed 4 Out of the 9 wickets we lost 7 were caught and we must have dropped 3 or 4
catches but we weren’t bowled out and over half our team got into double
figures, we play again on the 15th so we know what we need to put right, for a
new team we put on a show for the spectators with 499 runs scored on the day and
14 wickets falling We won the toss and decided to ask Torrevieja to bat and it proved to be the correct decision, the pitch a coconut mat laid on a totally uncut grass base and surround meant the wicket was like running and bowling on a mattress almost every ball bowled by our opening bowling attack of Colin Griffiths and young pace man Charlie Baker dribbled along the floor no matter where and what pace the ball had landed, and the pitch only slowly improved as the day went on mainly because of the players continually walking up and down it When the change bowlers came on Adam Alger, with his spin, and Bob Norton, with his seam bowling, each got three wickets. Adam 3 for 10 from 8 overs and Bob with 3 for 15 from his 7 overs, Vice Captain Gary “smurf“ Williams got two wickets but was expensive at going for 24 runs from his three overs, towards the end Michael Carter was introduced and boy has he come on as a bowler for a young lad of 14 he bowled exceptionally well and was rewarded with a wicket and he only went for 4 runs from his 3 overs The scorecard will show that Torrevieja were all out for 89 but we had about 5 dropped catches and their score should have been a lot less, even so our hopes were high as the wicket had flattened with almost 40 overs of bowling and walking on it and we were confident of a convincing win Opening batsmen Bob Norton was given out LBW for 0 on the basis that the ball had hit his pad this was the first of four controversial LBWs coming from the one end, He was soon joined back in the pavilion by his opening partner Gary Williams again given out LBW, but he had 8 runs against his name Wicket keeper Leigh Blann then came in and again showed his attacking prowess before he was out caught for 18, Adam Alger fresh from his success at the Spanish trials was given out first ball LBW. Jack Webster looking calm and composed on his debut was out caught for 8 off a ball that he was convinced he had hit into the pitch first. Graham Shelton was bowled for 11, not surprising as the previous ball had given him an enormous crack onto his foot, and his mind was clearly on protecting his foot rather than his wicket. Club President Jon Alger was then in the middle, and he was concentrating on seeing the returning opening bowlers two overs out , however a ball that he played with ease off the bat was given out LBW. Colin Griffiths was caught after scoring 3 runs and our last three wickets did not manage a run between them So the match was lost and we did not get anywhere near Torry’s score, but in spite of this everyone on our side enjoyed the match and we happily agreed to a return match with Torry in the future After the match we joined the opposition in a local bar where Adam Alger was named man of the match and the Torrevieja Cup which is played for in each match they play was again retained by them If
this report is seen as criticism of Torrevieja C.C then it is not meant to be
you can only play on what you are given and it is a shame that after the match
had been notified to the sports centre that the pitch remained uncut. Having
said this, with regard to cricket in Torrevieja then everyone is on a big
learning curve San Fulgencio cricket team go to Albir Spain have had an Adults as well as an under 17s team for some time now and Neill Brook head of Junior Cricket for Cricket Espana had decided that 2010 was going to be the year in which another four teams were going to be organised, namely under 11, under 13, under 15 and ladies the format was decided upon and San Fulgencio Club De Cricket as the Costa Blancas newest league team were asked if they had any suitable youngsters Chairman Jon Alger in consultation with some of the senior players and committee members decided that yes they did have some players and over a few training sessions these were whittled down to a short list of seven names As a club we obviously wanted to send as many players as possible but we also had to be aware of the fact that these players were not only representing our club but also potentially Spain so these seven had to be good enough. There was a short training session at the market place on La Marina at the usual Juniors practice time of 10.30 am Saturday and then it was everyone in the minibus to make the journey north At 1pm the names of Adam Alger, Charlie Baker, Michael Baker, Michael Carter, Angus McDowall and Ashley Williams were written on Neill Brooks sheet, unfortunately on the day Emily Hill Green was not available and the net practice began.
Watching the action was the Cricket Development officer for the Alicante region Kevin Laundon and the Vice Captain of Spain Graham Howe as well as various other officials, after the intensive net practice it was time for a proper match and the relevant teams were worked out All the assembled Juniors found the day very enjoyable and all too soon the match was over Neill Brook gave a short speech during which he mentioned how impressed he was with the standard of the Juniors and one or two names were mentioned, but for me one of the highlights of the day was when Graham Howe approached me for a quiet word and mentioned how impressed he had been with Adam Alger not only for his batting but his Bowling as well The day was rounded of
nicely by Jon Alger together with Juniors coach David Riley treating our Juniors
to a McDonalds on the way home. February 27th 2010 - San Fulgencio Cricket vs Sporting Alfaz This was a return fixture as S.F.C.C. had entertained Alfaz in our Clubs very first match on the Market Place in La Marina. For our team it was nice to get grass under our feet again after so many weeks and months training on tarmac at Fulgencio.
The fixture list will tell you that when we played the Alfaz first team in reality it was more a mixture of second teamers, midweek and Academy Players. Alfaz didn’t have much choice in this as almost their entire first team squad were at the Spanish senior trials at La Manga We did not think that there would be a more favourable time to give Alfaz a close game, unfortunately when it came for us to select a side we too were short of a few recognised first teamers, but this gave us a chance to field some players who may not have had much of an opportunity otherwise The toss was made and S.F.C.C. Skipper Bob Norton Invited Alfaz to bat, the plan was for a few quick wickets then give our other bowlers a game however, things never turn out how they are planned, David Climent gave Alfaz a solid start and his good work was continued by Chris Cooper who scored a half century. Then ex Nottinghamshire player Paul Taylor kept the scoreboard ticking over and was unbeaten at the end with an accomplished 50 under his belt, but our bowlers kept at it and showed good promise for the forthcoming League campaign, we restricted Alfaz to 164 from 30 overs but at least 6 catches were dropped and if these had been held then an altogether different report would have been written, in any case congratulations must go to Adam Alger, Kieron Ward and Charlie Baker who each got one wicket When it was our turn to bat we had our doubts because we had never scored more than 80 in a match, after both openers fell cheaply it was the turn of new player Leigh Blann from Gran Alacant to push the score along, and he top scored with 29 valuable runs to keep us up with the run rate. When Leigh fell Gary "smurf " Williams tried some innovative shots but fell cheaply, Graham Shelton in the middle order looks better with each passing match, then it was the turn of Chairman Jon Alger and with some lusty blows he hit a quick fire 28
At the end, it was down to David Riley and Michael Carter to try and bat out the overs but we were bowled out for 131 our best ever score as a team, and when we reviewed the match later in Mix bar on La Marina we all agreed that the day had been a very successful one For more information or history on S.F.C.C. then join the 2,450 people who

To this end there will still be no charge for anyone attending Training at the Market Place on La Marina, the only charge the Club will make is to cover the coach and petrol costs if we have to take anyone to further coaching at La Manga or Alfaz There will be no charge to anyone for being a member of the Club, we feel this is totally unique as Sporting Alfaz up at Albir charge 45 Euros for full playing Membership and the areas newest Club who are not even playing League Cricket this year are charging 35 Euros to Senior Players Regarding match fees, these are charged by the league and it is a charge that we cannot avoid, it covers the cost of the hire of the ground, the cost of the match ball and the fees for the league appointed umpires, But again, we are doing something in line with the Clubs ethos of making Cricket as accessible as possible, we will not pass on this charge to anyone under the age of 18, players aged 18 and over will pay 10 Euros per match if there is any shortfall this will be met by the Clubs Fundraising activities Press Secretary Bob Norton mentioned that the Clubs website page www.CostaBlancaFootball.com/sanfulgenciocricket has been receiving significant exposure since going live in the middle of January, for example a Google search on Tuesday 16th February for cricket on the Costa Blanca, showed that it is already on page one, number 7 out of 963,000 results!! On a final note the entire Committee as well as the the Clubs Players and
Officials are delighted that the Club are sending 6 juniors to the Spanish
Trials being held at Sporting Alfaz at Albir on Sunday 21st February, this means
that we have a potential Spanish Player in every age and sex group namely Under
11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 as well as the Spanish Womens team. January 12th 2010 - First newsletter published

San Fulgencio’s Captain, Bob Norton won the toss and asked Ben Essuah the La Manga Captain to bat first, La Manga with a very experienced team containing some Spanish internationals at full and under 17 level put the inexperienced San Fulgencio bowlers to the sword and amassed over 200 runs of their 40 over’s, but the bowling of Charlie, Colin and Gary for San Fulgencio shows they have three very promising players for next season After a twenty minute break it was time for San Fulgencio to bat, wickets fell regularly to La Mangas international bowling attack once half the side were out La Manga decided to try their less experienced bowlers and this let the owner of www.flightm8.com Walt Elders to hit San Fulgencio’s highest score of the day and push the score into the mid 60s before they were all out.

The purpose of the event was to promote cricket as a fun and healthy team sport. To encourage the children the luxury coach, games , food and drinks were provided free of charge.
Players and parents getting ready for their day trip to La Manga The response from the school was excellent with a total of 26 children attending, as well as S.F.C.C. sending a similar amount of players SFCC has now made a positive and vital link with Jose Manresa School, and have agreed to supply the school with equipment and coaching manuals to help kick start a cricket team at the school.

Luckily Spain were Playing Israel down at La Manga so we took the opportunity to take some Councillors down to watch the game, the Mayor was introduced to the Players before the match, then everyone fell silent as the two national Anthems were played. The Councillors were well looked after by
the Cricket Espana hierarchy and after a very liquid lunch in a nearby Hotel,
they agreed to back the Club in their future plans The match was part of the European championships being played at La Manga and Sporting Alfaz Cricket Clubs.

it was obvious that the club needed funds. * * Just a little personal note from Dougie at the Costa Blanca Football Team, Bob
Norton and John Alger are doing so much to help the kids get into something a
lot more worthwhile than just hanging round on street corners, please spread the
word to as many people as possible about this excellent cause. San Fulgencio Club de Cricket - The First Year
The winning Dads Team, It is a pity we cannot get some of these Gentleman to
play regularly
The losing lads and lasses team although they lost on the day, really there were no losers The original idea was to call the club, La Marina cricket club, but it very quickly became apparent that if we were to get any assistance from the town hall we would have to be called San Fulgencio Club de Cricket Thanks to Bob Norton of Sporting
Alfaz living on La Marina, a match was very
quickly organized against the Spanish Champions Sporting Alfaz and on 30th May
2009 Skipper Kevin Laundon bought a team to play on the market place in a t20
match. 2010 is a big year in the future of S.F.C.C The Club are still looking for players, especially batsmen and as we are playing 10 league matches next season spread over 5 months we can offer almost everyone some games, we also need a scorer, ladies, you aren’t forgotten, as we are building our social side and the ladies are working on a very exciting project around early May, more helpers and volunteers are needed for then. For anyone interested in joining this happy crowd, just email Bob on sfccpress@gmail.com - you're always sure of a friendly welcome.
